Disruptive technologies such as decentralised applications that remove the “middle man” have the potential to fundamentally and permanently alter the local and global market place for the better. However, these applications are yet to achieve the ultimate and essential goal of mainstream adoption.
The vast majority of the mainstream audience have never heard of this technology nor the personal benefits that are available.
However, time is of the essence. Ill-informed commentary and sensationalist media coverage threaten to limit the potential impact of the new technology and the underlying applications as they emerge.
A small but growing proportion of this audience are drawing negative conclusions by mistakenly connecting unrelated technologies, applications and one off “bad press” events. (Drugs, dark web, Bitcoin, blockchain)
Finally, this coverage increases the risk of misplaced government regulation and significant litigation risk for early entrants.
